Rolfing – The Story

Where Did Rolfing ® come from?

The history of Rolfing®

Rolfing® is named after Dr. Ida P. Rolf, a biochemist, who fifty years ago called her work Structural Integration. Dr. Rolf devoted her life to creating a wholistic system of soft tissue manipulation and movement education that organized the whole body in gravity. She discovered that remarkable changes in posture and structure could be achieved by working the body’s myofascial system and encouraging movement to support these changes.

Rolfing® is the nickname that many clients gave her work, and is now a registered service mark in 27 countries. Only individuals who have undertaken the extensive 3 part training through the Rolf Institute (Boulder Colorado) or representative bodies such as Australian Rolfing® Institute may claim to be certified Rolfers® or use the Rolfing® logo. Rolfing® Movement is a continuance of the studies, and other advanced classes must be undertaken to maintain registration.

Professional athletes, dancers, children, business people, and people from all walks of life have benefited from Rolfing®. People seek Rolfing® as a way to ease pain and chronic stress, and improve performance in their professional and daily activities. It’s estimated that 2 million people of all ages have successfully received Rolfing® work.
