A typical first visit to a Rolfer® begins with filling out a health questionnaire, discussing your desired outcomes from the sessions, and then a structural evaluation of your body posture and structure from the perspective of Rolfing®.
If you choose, you may have photos taken of before & after each session, or before and after the whole series. These photos are for your interest and use only and will not be displayed to any other person without your written consent.
You then will lie on a massage table (dressed in underwear or swimwear), sit on a bench or sometimes stand while the Rolfer® uses her hands, forearms or elbows to stretch and loosen the connective tissue that has thickened or shortened up, enabling the adjacent muscles and joints to move freely again.
You may feel a localized or general burning sensation, similar to a “Chinese Burn” or a sense of stretching. This only lasts while the tightened tissue areas are releasing. Soon after, often an experience of “warmth”, “length”, “lightness”, tingling sensations and new freedom in the area worked on, as well as in surrounding areas as the changes spread through the connective tissue network. Most people report greater ease in movement and breathing, improved balance and stability and a decrease in pain.
Usually, clients receive a basic 10-session sequence of Rolfing®. This gives a chance to work systematically and comprehensively in changing the bound-up and inefficient muscular patterns in your body. Many people choose to return months or years later for follow-up sessions that focus more closely on specific structural & movement issues.
Single sessions may have some positive effect, frequently more long-lasting than from massage, but for the best result a series is recommended. Bodywork sessions can either incorporate movement sessions, or these can be added, substituted or alternated to the 10 Series at your agreement.
Your first session is usually 1½ hour, and others from 1 – 1 ¼ hours.

Long Range Results
The results of Rolfing® differ from person to person. Generally, the body displays lift, or lightness, as the head and chest go up and the body lengthens; the pelvis, becoming more horizontal, brings the abdomen and buttocks in; the knees and feet track more nearly forward and the soles of the feet meet the ground more squarely. As the joints gain freedom, the major segments of the body rotate and hinge more freely on one another. Conserved energy is available for more stamina.
The lengthening and centring of the body together with an increased use of the deep musculature brings a quieting, flexible sense of self-possession and comfort that tends to replace former structural restrictions. This often displays greater self confidence and ease that is frequently noticeable by friends, family and even casual acquaintances. An elemental change such as this can have a profound, lasting effect on all aspects of living.
Although change is apparent immediately, the body will continue to adapt and improve for approximately a year following the completion of treatments.
